What Martha Wore: Clothing in the Ballard Diary

Maine State Library Reference Librarian Kelli Burnham will be bringing history to life with a presentation about Martha Ballard’s famous diary, detailing her life around Augusta, Maine, during the 18th & early 19th centuries.  The program covers research done into the clothing made and worn by the Ballard family. Alongside entries from the Martha Ballard’s diary, Kelli shares reproduction clothing made using historical sewing techniques that the audience is welcome to handle and examine. In addition to the reproduction clothing, the Androscoggin Historical Society will have a display of original clothing from their collection that matches the time period that Martha Ballard and her family lived in Maine.

A passing familiarity with A Midwife’s Tale by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich or Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon is encouraged, but not required.
